Update on Bijou

Bijou is one of the beautiful pups from a Northern community in Manitoba with severe Demodex mange. Heartbreakingly, her sister Jolie didn’t live long enough to make it into care while we waiting for a willing foster home, but luckily we were able to save Bijou and start her treatments!

Although she is only 20 lbs, Bijou is estimated at about 8 months of age! She is gaining some much-needed weight in her foster home (7 lbs in one week!), but she won’t be a very big dog. Bijou will be the perfect size to warm your feet or lap!

Bijou, feeling much better!
Bijou visited the vet today and it was confirmed that her mange sores are healing well! Her foster family describes Bijou as a smart, happy girl. She is already a beautiful tribute to her name (which means “jewel”), but we can’t wait to see how stunning she is once she’s all healed!

Demodex mange is a skin condition usually found in puppies or dogs with compromised immune systems. It is caused by parasites, but it is not contagious to humans or other pets. To treat the mange, we need to give medications to kill the parasites as well as treating the sores already on the dog’s body. It can take a long time to heal severe cases of mange like Bijou’s, as well as a lot of money. The average cost to treat a case of mange is $800, and we have had 5 cases in our care in the past few months alone.

Thank-you to everyone who has donated to her care, without you we couldn't help this special little girl. We still do need funds to help cover her care, as well as the care of other sick pups in our care.

Also, a special thank you to Bijou's foster family. Without you, this lovely girl wouldn't have had a chance at life. Now, she will have a wonderful one!
