Black Dog Friday

By: MMDR

Did you know that around half of the animals we have up for adoption currently are black or have large black markings? Of all of the colours of Mutts (and Muttins, our adoptable cats), black is the hardest to photograph well and the hardest to find homes for.

Although our Black Dog Week ends today, on Black Dog Friday, we encourage you to consider a black dog for your next furry family member all of the time!

In case you need some extra reasons to adopt a black animal, here are a few fun ones:
  1. Black animals are fashionable: black goes with everything!
  2. Holding a black animal will make you look thinner, because black is slimming.
  3. Black animals show up well on snow – you’ll never have trouble finding your pet outside in the winter!
All of the black Mutts and Muttins below are currently available for adoption. Visit our website or Facebook for more information about them!

Babe, Care, Cash
Cato, Chardonnay, Goldie
Gummy, Poet, Kate

Black dogs! They never get dirty,
The longer you walk them, the blacker they get.
Sometimes, I think I should wash mine,
But then they say, “Mama, oh no! Not yet!”

Meet Billy!

By: MMDR and Breanna C

Billy is ready for a walk any time!
Our Black Dog of the Day today is our sweet little guy, Billy! Billy is an 8 month old sable (light tan with black) Shepherd cross, and he is a "Busy Bee", which means he's a fun loving, very spunky guy! Billy is very clever and is already mostly crate and house trained, but he will require a family who wants to stay active with him and keep him entertained so that he can be a well behaved boy. Billy won't be a huge dog, and we imagine he will be around 50-60 pounds fully grown.

Here is what his foster mom has to say about him:

Billy is a very active and playful dog. He loves to be around people, especially when they give him belly rubs. He is very cuddly and loves giving kisses. It still surprises us how smart his is and how quickly he picks up new training/tricks. He is also very talkative, and if he wants something he will be sure to let you know.  He is a huge sweet heart and just wants to be loved/love someone.

Billy will be happy to give you a
good cuddle at the end of the day!
While he has come a long way since we first got him, he could still benefit from some further manners. He has a tendency to come on strong and sometimes misplaces his manners when around new people or animals. This tendency has been a slight challenge when it comes to introducing him to older dogs and new people. However, once he calms down, everyone loves him!

We always have people telling us how cute he is when we take him on walks, which is nothing short of the truth cause he really is a beautiful dog.

Consider applying for Billy today and we promise that he will keep you active and well loved for all of his days!

Meet Kate!

By: MMDR

Black dog syndrome makes us crazy! We look at beautiful, fun, amazingly smart dogs and see them as very adoptable. Whether black dog syndrome is caused by superstition or simply because black dogs don't photograph quite as well, it's quite silly. So if you're looking for a new companion or family member, apply to meet some of our black beauties today. They are amazing dogs!

Wouldn't you love to meet our gorgeous girl Kate today, and start a fun filled life together?

On Monday, you met Goldie, our stunning black German Shepherd. Well, today we are happy to introduce you to her 6-month-old daughter Kate! This lovely girl was assessed with our Meet Your Match program and is a "Busy Bee"! This means that she is an active girl that is curious, friendly and trusting. Kate would do best in a home that likes to take lots of long walks, and maybe even take her on bike rides or learn some doggy sports. She is just a fun-loving gal who will make her furever family very happy!

Meet Goldie!

By: MMDR

Goldie may have a black
coat, but she has a heart
of gold!
Meet Goldie, one of our beautiful adoptables featured for this weeks focus on black dogs. Goldie is a one-year-old black, long haired German Shepherd who has lots of love to share. She is a typical German Shepherd- smart, aware of everything around her, quiet, well mannered and above all loyal and confident. Her striking good looks are easily captured in her professional photos- she is a stunning example of her breed. She came in to care with her daughter Kate (named for the famous mother and daughter duo, Goldie Hawn and Kate Hudson) a few months ago.

Her foster mom Alisha has been taking Goldie for some special training at Oakwood Stables. Each and every Friday she participates in an agility class that challenges her physically but more importantly mentally. Many times active dogs can receive the exercise they need through mental stimulation such as a puzzle or game.

Goldie's ideal home is one without cats or small animals.
Is it with you?
The stable is the perfect environment for new foster dogs to be introduced to new people and animals, build confidence and to learn to pay attention around distractions. Goldie loves her agility classes- she soars over the A-Frame with ease and races through the tunnel without a second glance.

Goldie would like a home that
challenges her with lots of
exercise and entertainment!
Goldie’s ideal home would be somewhere that she will get a calm but firm leadership approach. German Shepherds are a highly intelligent breed- once they bond to their family they are very people oriented and aim to please. She enjoys long walks with her foster mom, and when no one is around she finds ways to amuse herself by dropping her toys on the floor and chasing them around. She is a curious dog who loves learning new tricks and exploring new places.

Don’t overlook Goldie just because of the colour of her fur! She would make a wonderful addition to any family. If you are looking for a loyal and caring companion who will be your best friend for the rest of her life, look no further than Goldie. Apply to meet her today!

We Love Black Mutts!

By: MMDR

In honour of our black Mutts, we are focusing our entire week on a special Black Dog Week! We will have a new Black Dog related blog post every day, and feature black dogs on Facebook and our website.

Adopt a black Manitoba Mutt this week, and you will receive an extra special adoption package to celebrate your new family member!

Remember, black dogs are just as beautiful, loving and loyal as their more colourful counterparts! Adopt a black dog today. You won't regret it! We sure haven't.

All of the black dogs below are Manitoba Mutts staff doggies! We can vouch for them being just as amazing (if not more so) than dogs of other shades.

Presenting our Black Mutts!

By: MMDR

Did you know that rescues have trouble finding homes for black (and mostly black) dogs? Our black beauties are every bit as loveable and deserving of a great home as our other dogs! Check out a few of our stunning black dogs in foster care!

Chloe is an active 1.5 year old female German Shepherd cross. She would love a home where she could be challenged with some new tasks (learning tricks or a sport) but also be able to relax at your feet when it's time to watch a movie. Chloe is only about 45 lbs! Are you her person?

This is Goldie, and we know her coat is black, but her heart is pure gold! This beautiful 70 pound long haired German Shepherd female loves to run and play, and learns new things very quickly. She does very well with other dogs and people, but is a little too interested in cats. Wouldn't you love to bring her home today?

Kate is 4 months old, fully housebroken, and loves affection! Her favourite activity is receiving belly rubs! Come show her how great you are at giving them, and maybe you'll be lucky enough to adopt her.

Scorpio is about 5 months old, and is crate trained and paper trained! He loves the company of other dogs and really enjoys a good play. This sweet boy is looking for an active, fun family to call his own. Can he join yours?

Babe loves car rides, snuggling under the blankets and running around outside. He is pretty good on a leash, and is fully house trained. Babe does not do well left alone, and would be the perfect companion for a long haul truck driver or for someone who works from home. He's a very smart boy and has already learned some tricks as well as his basic commands!

Cash is a smaller boy, and is thought to be a Cattle Dog X Boston Terrier. He is so stunning with his baby face and brindled leg markings! He loves people, enjoys being carried and cuddled, and is a very sweet, gentle soul. He's just the most darling little guy! Wouldn't you love to cuddle this boy forever?

Isn't Sprockett just the cutest? He will be a medium sized dog (around 50-70 lbs) and has a sassy, bossy personality. He loves to play with other dogs and learn new tricks! Sprockett would love a family where he can play and grow.

Thelma is one of our Parvo survivors, and we think she's the sweetest thing! She is a very well behaved little girl who is paper trained and mostly housebroken. She hasn't needed to be crated in her foster home because she never seems to get into trouble! Thelma is expected to grow to about 40-60 lbs. Can she grow up in your home knowing a loving family?

We have many other dogs of all shapes, sizes, colours and personality types! Whatever your choice for your new furry family member, please remember to "Adopt, don't Shop!"

Black Dog Week

By: MMDR

Pickle, 4 month old Border Collie X Lab
male in
need of a foster home.

Next week, leading up to Black Friday, we are featuring our beautiful black Mutts!

As many people are becoming aware, black dogs are often passed over for lighter coloured dogs when it comes time to adopt or even to foster. Rescues and shelters are left with healthy, well behaved, and gorgeous dogs that are inexplicably passed over just because their coats are black! There are even dogs passed over for months with no offers to foster (like Pickle and Dooley), and we can't find any reason for it other than their colour!
Dooley, 3 year old Rottie X male in
need of a foster home.

Keep an eye on our blog next week for some very special posts featuring our black Manitoba Mutts, past and present. We will be showing you how lovely these dogs are both inside and out, in their foster homes and for some of the lucky ones, in their furever homes too!
