Happy Tails: Shilo/Flicka

By: MMDR and Mandy L.

Shilo (Flicka) as a puppy in foster care
Remember our little husky puppy Flicka? She was in the care of MMDR with Parvovirus, and thanks to the wonderful treatment of our vets and the amazing care of her foster home, Flicka (now Shilo) is happy in her furever home! Here is an update from her new family:

Shilo has joined a family of 3 children, ages 15, 12, and 2. She has a cat sister (Zoey- aka “baby cat”) and cat brother (Nibbler) whom she likes to chase and scare the b’jeebers out of….eeep! (We are working on that).

Shilo in her furever home, happy
and healthy!
She is a big suck and insists on making too much racket at night in her kennel for anyone to sleep so she gets her way and sleeps at the bottom of our bed at night. She has become my third leg and follows me wherever I go. She is doing well with potty training, with the exception of a few accidents. She has learned to sit on command, and we are working on “leave it” when chasing the cats and waiting for treats.

Without your generous donations, and the help of our many volunteers and supporters, MMDR would never be able to treat dogs like Shilo. Please, consider making a donation towards our dogs today. Bright eyes and wagging tails are the best signs of gratitude we can think of!

Revive Fitness: Our Pounds for Parvo Sponsor

By: MMDR

Bruno (available for adoption) knows how
important fitness is... so let's go for a walk!
It's that time of year again; days are getting shorter, and waistlines begin to grow. Beat the holiday weight gain by signing on for our Pounds for Parvo Fitness Challenge today!

This challenge isn't just for those needing to lose a few; it's great for anyone wanting to get into better shape with amazing support and resources while also helping fundraise much needed dollars for our sick Mutts! We will be working with the lovely Ainsley McSorley, owner of and trainer at Revive Fitness in Winnipeg, to help participants achieve their goals.

Ainsley has created Revive Fitness to be a different sort of fitness centre; small class sizes (limited to 8 people per class) and highly qualified trainers make for a much more personalized and quality experience. For example, Ainsley is not only a Certified Personal Training Specialist, but also holds a degree in Human Nutrition. She has personal experience in achieving lofty fitness goals, being a competitor in numerous fitness competitions and even becoming an Oxygen Fitness Model recently! Ainsley works towards an individualized training experience for each person, including fitness and nutritional goals into every plan.

Your $100+ sponsorship fee for our PFP Fitness
Challenge will help us treat very ill dogs like
Wish. Sadly, Wish passed away due to her Parvo
illness in August, 2012. RIP Wish!
Our PFP Fitness Challenge is suitable for just about everyone, and is designed to be accomplished from home, with plenty of online support from other participants as well as our sponsoring trainer. There will be a variety of workouts suitable for all levels of fitness, as well as many tips, tricks and fun facts. We will be posting regular ideas on how to stay fit with your pets, too! Unfortunately, a lot of us allow their waistlines to expand a little too much as well, which can be very detrimental to their health.

What have you got to lose, besides a few pounds or a daily date with the elevator at work? Sign up for our Pounds for Parvo Fitness Challenge today: get fit and help us get some Manitoba Mutts healthy!

Parvo Puppies Update

By: MMDR and Kim M

As you know, MMDR has had a number of puppies with Parvo lately. This treatment is lengthy and very, very expensive. For example, Pumpkin and Boo, two of our surviving Parvo puppies have been treated at a cost of around $3,000 each to date, with more bills coming in towards their continuing care. Without donations, we can’t afford to continue helping these little angels.

We also wouldn’t be able to treat these pups without the amazing support of our veterinary team and caring foster homes! Here is a letter from Pumpkin and Boo’s incredibly loving foster mom, with great news about how these beautiful little girls are doing!

Hello!

Boo (left) and Pumpkin (right) feeling much better!
Just wanted to give you the update on the girls. They were both put back on antibiotics as of Sunday and as of this morning they seem to have responded well! The ones Boo was on were apparently only good for a week and then lose potency so even though the Rx said to give til finished, apparently they would have lost effectiveness. That would have been coupled with the fact she has grown so the dosage would not have been enough. They’re now on the higher dose which appears to have made a difference in both. They were both scraped for mange but found nothing (yay!). I had treated both for lice on the weekend because they had been scratching a lot again and the vet gave them both Revolution. They are still scratching, but not as much. I put them back on the GI high energy food because the little buggers were not eating the regular stuff without the GI added- picky little devils were holding out for the good stuff! They’re devouring about three cans a day! Once they’re feeling better I’ll transition them back to their regular food, but just want to be sure they’re eating well while they’re still not 100%. They are scheduled to receive their second shot tomorrow evening. Is that OK with all the other stuff still going on with them?

If there is anything else you feel I should be doing with these little ones, please let me know.

Little miss Boo was very pleased with herself this morning. She’s been trying for a week or so to jump up on the futon in their room and this morning she finally got it! Pumpkin is trying so hard, but so far just can’t seem to get the timing! I’m sure she’ll work on it again tonight.

Kim

Please, consider donating towards the continued care of Pumpkin, Boo, and our other sick dogs. They appreciate every day they are healthy!

Pounds for Parvo-Health and Fitness Challenge

6 Week Challenge - $100.00 minimum donation per person
The entire goal of the challenge is to help people reach their health and fitness goals in a safe and healthy manner!
How it works:
Once a participant donates their minimum donation of $100.00, they will be invited to join our challenge’s Facebook page. They will also be emailed a launch package.

There will be a series of set rules that everyone will need to follow as part of the challenge:
Eat 3-5 small meals per day.
Drink 8 glasses of water a day.
Get 3-5 sessions of exercise per week, minimum of 20 minutes per session.

Each week we will post a new weekly health challenge; we will start small and build on to it each week, while still incorporating the rules from the weeks before.

Each week we will post three workouts with our Revive Fitness professional, Ainsley McSorley, which people will be able to modify to their own fitness level. We will incorporate all forms of fitness, such as cardio, weight training, yoga, pilates etc.  All which can be done from the comfort of your own home.

Each week we will post a fun “pup related” post such as an activity you can do with your pet etc.

Motivation and Support:
Our online forum will be a place where people can network, motivate, encourage and inspire one another. We want people to connect and really help one another reach their goals.

To encourage discussions and get people connected, we will post discussion topics, request participation, encourage participants etc.

To keep everyone motivated and on track, throughout each week we will post healthy recipes, links to helpful websites (such as food trackers, health sites etc.), meal plan ideas, fun fitness ideas and health information etc.

About Parvovirus:
Canine Parvovirus (Parvo) is a virus that affects the intestinal tract of susceptible dogs, often young puppies, and is fatal without (and sometimes with) very lengthy, intensive, and expensive treatment. Parvo costs us a minimum of $1000 per dog (without complications) to treat.
